Terrarium Pin

Capture your favorite succulents in this simple-to-make terrarium pin

MATERIALS

  • Linen
  • Wool felt
  • Chenille 18 needle
  • Embroidery thread
  • Sewing thread
  • Scissors: fabric and embroidery
  • Pin back

1. Transfer the pattern onto the linen.

2. Begin stitching the pattern, starting with the desert plants in the terrarium, following the keys for the Zebra cactus, the jade plant, the cliff maids and the spiral grass. (see Desert Plants in Flowers Category: Zebra Cactus, Jade Plant, Cliff Maids, Spiral Grass).
Add French knots to fill the base of the terrarium as shown. Do not stitch the terrarium at this stage; this will be completed in step 4.

3. Once you have completed the embroidery of the desert plants, place the embroidered linen right side facing up onto the wool felt.

4. Using six strands of DMC 310, complete the embroidery by stitching the outline of the terrarium with straight stitch, sewing through both the linen and the felt so that the fabric layers are attached to each other.

5. Following the outline of the terrarium, cut around the edge of the felt-backed embroidered design, leaving a fabric border of less than 1in (2.5cm).

6. Use sewing thread to attach the pin back to the back of the felt, taking care not to sew through to the embroidered linen.

DO NOT PULL TOO HARD WHEN STITCHING THROUGH THE LINEN AND FELT, AS THIS WILL BUNCH UP THE FABRIC.
